Most people are aware that diet generally pays a large role in health. This is also true of the health of the teeth. Carbohydrates (sugars in various forms) provide the best food for the bacteria that cause tooth decay. By a common biological process known as Glycolosis, sugars are processed by certain bacteria into acids.

Over time, the acid waste products of these bacteria are strong enough to break down the surface of enamel. The enamel surface thus roughened and pitted by acids then becomes a perfect haven for more bacteria to colonize and the cycle continues with increasing speed until the bacteria have made their way all the way through the outer and inner layers to the core of the tooth known as the pulp where, among other structures, resides the nerve of the tooth.

Although the process described above can be interrupted by proper brushing and flossing, an even better preventive measure is to avoid ingesting sugars in forms that are difficult to remove from the tooth surface such as sticky candies and gooey confections.

For infants and small children that can not choose for themselves appropriately, refrain from putting them to bed with any kind of candy, juice, or sugary drink. Such practices can lead to a devastating condition known as Baby Bottle Syndrome.
