Orthodontics is the science (and art) of realigning rotated, crowded or otherwise misaligned teeth. Although orthodontic treatment is often first contemplated for cosmetic reasons, there are frequently significant functional and other health related reasons for orthodontic treatment. A partial listing is included below:

  • Periodontal breakdown -  When teeth are positioned too closely to one another the surrounding bone and gum tissues may be negatively affected by poor blood supply and/or an inordinate buildup of plaque and tarter.

  • Premature wearing and chronically sore or overly sensitive teeth - Unbalanced bites may cause bruising of the tooth socket, premature wear of the enamel, or extreme temperature sensitivity.

  • Increased risk of tooth decay - Crowded teeth or, conversely, spaces between the teeth often cause tooth decay even when the teeth are well cared for.

  • Gastrointestinal disorders -  Failure of teeth to mesh correctly may keep food from being chewed completely. This makes it difficult for the stomach and other digestive organs to function properly. Symptoms such gas and heartburn may be directly related to bite problems.

  • Temperomandibular joint dysfunction - Misaligned teeth can force the jaws into positions that, over time, may cause muscular tension on the muscles of the face jaw joint and neck leading to pain and/or damage to the jaw joints.

  • Psychological stress - Laughing and smiling are natural stress relievers. Poorly aligned or otherwise unsightly smiles may cause some people to habitually hide their teeth and limit smiling or laughing. Children and adolescents are particularly sensitive to peer reaction to their appearance.
