Pain and/or swelling are the most common dental emergencies and can be caused by many things.

  • Swelling - Regardless of the location most para-dental swelling (unless caused by trauma) is the result of infection somewhere nearby. The first line of defense in this situation is:
    • Antibiotics
    • Warm Compresses
    • Saline (Salt Water) rinses

Keep in mind that these suggestions are intended as first aid until a doctor is available for consultation. To paraphrase an old saying, "A person who has himself for a doctor has a fool for a patient".
