Periodontics Periodontics: (From the Latin peri, meaning around; and dontos meaning tooth). The field of dentistry having to do with the study and treatment of the structures and tissues surrounding the teeth. This includes the bone which is directly surrounding and supporting the tooth, known as the alveolus, and the soft tissue which directly covers the alveolus, known as the gingiva or gums.
